Our history: A long line of tripe preparers
Our business has a deep-rooted history in the preparation, dressing and dealing of tripe, developing from human use to the animal friendly nutrient rich food it is today. Tripe preparing has been a family business since the early 1870s, Robert Ridyard was the first in a long line of tripe prepares.
Ellen Ridyard and Thomas Ridyard were the children of Robert. Thomas took on the family business and presumed the role as tripe preparer in 1881 and was a tripe dresser in 1891. Meanwhile Ellen married Edward Hall (Senior), in 1882 THE Edward Hall (junior) was born. By 1901 at the age of eighteen census records show Edward Hall junior to have taken on the family business and is now a tripe preparer.

The Tripe Factory Timeline

Edward Hall created E. Hall Ltd, a small family run tripe & poultry shop catering for people.
1890
Edward Hall passed the business on to his daughter Nancy, the factory was in Trimdon Street in Sunderland with the tripe & poultry shop in the city centre.
Nancy passed the business on to Thomas.
The shop sold tripe, cow heals, udder, lamb trotters and chicken to people. Tripes were collected on the back of a horse and cart from local butchers and abattoir.
1960s
Dog food was made on a Friday afternoon when the meat coming in needed to be processed quickly and there wasn’t enough time to produce the human quality food.
2000s
Thomas passed the business on to his son Alan, E. Hall started producing dog food only and has been supplying thousands of happy dogs, ferrets and cats with food ever since!
The business continues to grow and prides itself on producing the highest quality produce.
